2017 CSSEA AGM and Conference – Final Days to Register

Registration for this year’s AGM and Conference, Strength in Diversity, will be closing at noon on Friday, October 20. If you plan on attending and have not yet registered, do so soon, as many sessions are nearing capacity. In addition to the dynamic program, we are excited to celebrate our four BC Community Social Services Awards of Excellence recipients at a Luncheon on October 25. Register online and we look forward to seeing you in Kelowna.

Election of 2019 Bargaining Committee

The 2019 Bargaining Committee will be elected at the upcoming AGM on October 24 so we can be ready in the event bargaining commences in 2018. At the direction of CSSEA’s panels at its recent meeting, we remind members of the criteria that makes an ideal Bargaining Committee member, aside from experience in the social services sector. They are:

  • Ability to listen calmly, without getting caught up in emotional arguments;
  • Ability to work well under stress and tight deadlines;
  • Broad thinker who can see alternative points of view;
  • Ability to handle periods of waiting, which inevitably occurs in bargaining ;
  • Comfort with being away from the agency; and
  • Good health

I encourage members to consider putting their names forward to their respective Divisional Chairs:

Class 5 Driver’s License Arbitration Appeal

CSSEA has filed an appeal on a recent decision that requires employers to pay the renewal fees for Class 5 driver’s licences ($75 every five years) for employees who are required to drive their own vehicles as part of their jobs or who are required to confirm that they hold a valid Class 5 driver’s licence as a job requirement. Arbitrator Robert Pekeles ruled in favour of the CSSBA and pending the outcome of CSSEA’s appeal, all employers must pay for Class 5 driver’s licenses effective June 12, 2017. Payment of the driver’s license does not attract union dues but is a taxable benefit that should be reported on T4 tax slip boxes 14 and 40. We will keep members apprised of further developments as they arise.

Compensation and Employee Turnover Survey

Members who have not yet completed the 2017 Compensation and Employee Turnover Survey are urged to do so soon, as responses will form an important data source that will contribute to the development of employers’ proposals for the next round of collective bargaining. Those with questions on completing the survey are asked to contact the Research and Knowledge Management department at This email address is being protected from spambots. Upcoming CSSEA Publications

CSSEA will be releasing a number of publications in the next few weeks that will be of interest to members. The 2016 Employee Turnover Report by Classification and 2016 CSSEA Fact Book will be made available soon and those attending the AGM and Conference are invited to visit the Research and Knowledge Management exhibitor table for a hard copy.

2017 AGM and Conference

As we complete final preparations for the 2017 AGM and Conference, we invite all members once again to join us in Kelowna from October 24-26 at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort. I look forward to connecting with you in what is sure to be three great days of learning and networking.
