CEO Update - May 2017

Virus/Ransomware Advisory – Action Required

Members may have read about the global ransomware campaign known as “WCry,” “Wana,” “WCrypt,” “WanaDecryptor” or “WanaCry.” This ransomware impacts all versions of Windows before Windows 10 and those who do not update their software are at risk of having all files on an infected computer and network encrypted and recoverable only by restoring from a backup. To protect your networks, please ensure all systems are up to date with Windows updates and antivirus.

For Windows (7, 8.1, 10) and Windows Server (2008, 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 r2): Run Windows update on your computer to ensure you’ve installed the recent Microsoft Monthly Security Rollup updates.

For Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003: If your product is “custom support only” and no longer receives updates, download and install this link.

For more information contact Public Safety Canada.

New Employer’s Guide

The Employer’s Guide to the 2014-2019 Collective Agreement has been updated and is now posted online by article. The document offers a set of uniform guidelines for understanding the Collective Agreements and also provides recommendations for implementing and administrating the terms of the Collective Agreements. They can be accessed by logging on to CSSEA’s website, clicking Resources/Members Home/HRLR/Employers Interpretation Manual.

Provincial Election Results

With the close results of the recent provincial election triggering recounts in some jurisdictions and the tabulation of absentee ballots still underway, it’s unlikely we will see any significant decisions coming from government in the immediate future. We expect more clarity on the composition of government and its implications in the coming weeks.

HR Practitioners’ Meetings – Kootenay Region

There is still time to register for two upcoming HR Practitioners’ Meetings, taking place in Cranbrook and Castlegar on May 30 and June 1 respectively. The sessions will be facilitated by CSSEA’s David Cox and will cover management rights, conducting investigations and excessive absenteeism, among other topics; in addition, Satvinder Basran will be speaking about the WorkSafeBC Health and Safety Initiative. A portion of each session will also be reserved for attendees’ questions and those who wish to suggest a topic can email them directly to David at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Registration for both sessions can be completed online.

WorkSafeBC Update

Further to a recent CSSEA Info on three new WorkSafeBC Occupational Health & Safety Regulations (OHSR), several resources have since been released. They include a 4-hour online course for worker health and safety representatives; a joint health and safety committee evaluation tool and accompanying guide; and joint health and safety committee resources for trainers. The new resources can be accessed through WorkSafeBC.

In addition, the WorkSafeBC Pilot Project has issued its April newsletter which, along with other pilot project resources, can be found on CSSEA’s website.

Compensation and Employee Turnover Survey: Upcoming Deadline

There are two weeks remaining to complete the 2017 Compensation and Employee Turnover Survey. Data compiled through the survey is used to report the total compensation cost of the sector to PSEC; support the implementation of the 2014-2019 Collective Agreements; and serve as a reference for the distribution of comparability and anomaly wage increases. The data collected also allows us to produce a number of useful reports. Submissions are due on May 31st, 2017 and those requiring assistance can contact David Lin at 604.601.3132, toll free 1.800.377.3340 ext. 132 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
