Pension Plan Update


In 2006, CSSEA member agencies were authorized by the Public Sector Employers' Council to participate in the Municipal Pension Plan effective March 31, 2010. This page provides information through Pension Info, a communications bulletin for CSSEA member agency employees, detailing the plan and advising employees on what they need to do.

What is the Municipal Pension Plan?

The Municipal Pension Plan is one of a number of public sector pension plans administered by the British Columbia Pension Corporation. It is the same plan that covers employees in the municipal sector, health sector and many other employee groups across the province. For additional information about the Municipal Pension Plan, visit the BC Pension Corporation’s website at www.mpp.pensionsbc.ca.

Which employee groups will participate in the Municipal Pension Plan?

The Municipal Pension Plan will welcome participation of the following employee groups:

  • Management and excluded employees of CSSEA member agencies
  • Non-union hourly employees of CSSEA member agencies
  • Unionized employees of CSSEA member agencies

Timeline for implementation of the Municipal Pension Plan

A timeline has been developed to ensure everything that needs to be addressed prior to March 31, 2010, is done in a timely fashion. This timeline was developed in consultation with the BC Pension Corporation.

Webpage accessible by all employees will provide up-to-date information on the MPP, including the posting of all communication bulletins.


January 2008

Bargaining unit employees communication plan - Pension Info

A series of communication bulletins from the union reference group to bargaining unit employees to inform them of key issues regarding the MPP.


February - September 2008

MPP employee communication plan

The MPP will develop a DVD specifically for the sector that will highlight plan details. The DVD will be available to all sectoral employees. The MPP will also conduct a series of regional meetings across the province to which all eligible employees will be invited to review key elements of the plan.


September - December 2008

Advise employers regarding the status of the current matching contributions RRSP plans

It is likely that all matching contribution RRSP plans will be discontinued at March 31, 2010.


In or before December 2008

Advise employees of the status of their current matching contribution RRSP plans

It is likely that the funding in these plans will become the sole property of each participating employee.


In or before December 2008

Employee enrolment in the MPP

All current eligible employees will be registered in the MPP unless an employee specifically elects to complete a form opting out of the plan.


June - December 2009

MPP begins
