Becoming a Member
CSSEA, in collaboration with member agencies and government, promotes sustainability of services by providing quality human resources and labour relations services.
Member status
Members benefit from a specialized set of resources and services all provided under one roof: a personal HRLR Consultant, a collective bargaining negotiator and up-to-the-minute sector news. CSSEA provides members with a crucial link to developments in the social services sector and assists them in achieving their own organizational goals.
CSSEA members are organizations that meet the membership criteria and have been designated a member by Order in Council. If your organization is not a member but you would like to consider joining, keep reading.
What are the membership criteria?
To become a member of CSSEA, your organization must:
- receive at least $250,000 annually in provincial funding from provincial ministries and/or authorities excluding grants
- receive at least 50 percent of your total annual funding from these provincial sources
- receive at least 50 percent of your provincial funding from non-health provincial ministries or authorities
- are not a stand alone alcohol and drug service provider
- have a community of interest with the community social services sector
- be unionized

What are the membership fees?
There are currently no fees for membership in CSSEA.
Services to members
CSSEA provides human resources and labour relations services to contracted service providers within the community social services sector in British Columbia. Specific areas include:
Human resources
We offer advice and assistance with employee issues, such as:
- interpretation of employment standards, human rights and WorkSafeBC
- discipline and dismissal
- attendance management
- harassment in the workplace
- performance management
- recruitment and selection
Labour relations
CSSEA is the sole and exclusive bargaining agent for our members and provides advice on:
- certification, decertification and other proceedings at the Labour Relations Board
- group collective bargaining
- collective agreement interpretation and administration
- dispute resolution through the Labour Relations Board
Other services
- health and welfare issues
- management training
- management and excluded staff compensation and benefits
Becoming a Member
How do we join?
You can request a membership information form by contacting CSSEA's Director, Member Services, at 604.687.7220 or toll-free at 1.800.377.3340.
What happens after we've submitted the form?
CSSEA reviews the information provided and if you qualify for membership, your organization is assigned to one of four membership divisions: aboriginal services, community living services, community living BC or general services. You are assigned the division that best meets your needs and community of interest.
Also, you are sent an introductory letter with all of the information and resources you need to start off, including the names of the HRLR Consultants assigned to service your organization.
